Bruxism is involuntary, repetitive movements performed by clenching / grinding teeth without a functional purpose such as chewing. Bruxism usually occurs during sleep, and patients are often unaware that they are clenching their teeth. Bruxism is often noticed during a dentist’s visit. Causes of bruxism; systemic factors (genetic central nervous system disorders, endocrine diseases, side effects of psychiatric drugs), local factors (closure disorder, various dental treatments) and psychological factors (anxiety, stress, aggressive personality type).

Signs and Symptoms

  • Abrasion on the chewing surface of the teeth
  • Fractures on teeth or fillings (especially anterior teeth)
  • Gingival diseases
  • wobbling, spacing of teeth
  • Dental sensitivity
  • Cheek irritation
  • Headache, especially in the morning
  • Triggered migraine pains
  • Pain, noise, locking in the jaw joint
  • Earache

The treatment of bruxism varies according to the diagnosis. Generally, occlusal splints, some physical therapy methods, medication therapy, arthrocentesis and botox are used.
